Biography

Antonio Romoleroux was born in Quito, Ecuador in 1968. He earned his BA in Visual Arts from the University of the Arts, in Guayaquil, Ecuador and his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the College of Fine Arts at the Central University of Ecuador.

Since his first solo exhibition in 1989, Romoleroux’s work has been exhibited in major galleries and institutions in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa. His work was the subject of an exhibition organized by the Consulate of Ecuador in New York, at the Queens Museum, New York, in 2010. Recent exhibitions include “El Mensaje de las Modelos” (The Message of the Models), at Kuntraum Artescena, Leipzig, Deutschland, in 2021; “Antonio Romoleroux, Anthology”, at PUCE Cultural Center, Quito, in 2018; “Dass Bewusste Ich”, at the Ecuadorian Embassy in Berlin, Germany, in 2015; Romoleroux is known for creating his own techniques, such as handmade abaca paper fused with copper etching and aquatint, in large formats, with which he created his work “Natem”, winner of the Mariano Aguilera Prize in 1995, listed as Cultural Heritage of Ecuador by the National Institute of Cultural Heritage.

Antonio Romoleroux has received numerous awards and distinctions in recognition of his cultural achievements. In particular, Romoleroux received the Overall Rank 1, International Art contest, Talentila Foundation, in Hisar, India, in 2024; the Premiazione alla Carriera, Associazione Culturale Narda Martinez Pittrice, in Varese, Italy, in 2023; the Recognition of Artistic Career by the Consulate of Ecuador in Los Angeles, California, in 2021; he was awarded the Doctor Vicente Rocafuerte Decoration for Cultural Merit, National Assembly of the Republic of Ecuador, in 2020; He received the Recognition for Artistic Career from the Ministry of Culture and Heritage of Ecuador in 2019 and Kunstraum Artescena in Leipzig, Germany in 2018 and the First Prize in Painting, awarded by the Ministry of Social Welfare, the Undersecretariat of Culture and the National Directorate of Youth of Ecuador in 1991.

In 2021, Romoleroux founded the “International Resilience Center” with the purpose of providing free psychological care to people who need treatment and cannot afford it.
