Handmade abaca paper fused with copper engraved “My essence in your senses” (1994-2022)

SERIES: “MY ESSENCE IN YOUR SENSES”
In this series the paper is made by hand with abaca fibers. This plant (Musa Textilis), rich in cellulose, is a palm tree that serves to restore soils that have been destroyed by monocultures. For this reason, this paper symbolizes nature and fragilities.
The copper is etched, aquatinted and soldered with silver solder, it symbolizes industry and strengths.
The Amazonian semiotics engraved on copper represent the jaguar, the anaconda, energy, the frog, the harpy eagle, the snake, shrimp, monkey, butterfly, caterpillar, toad, scorpion, among others, which are sacred symbols of the biodiversity of this unique ecosystem in the world.
By fusing paper with copper, I physically demonstrate that nature is what contains industry and that frailties can be converted into strengths and spiritual consciousness.
The handmade paper, made from abaca fibers, symbolizes nature with its peace, wisdom and health. Copper symbolizes the city with its stress, violence and illness. Paper symbolizes fragility and metal symbolizes strength, however, paper is what contains metal, meaning that weaknesses can be converted into strengths and that fragility and strength are part of the essence of being, the essence of all human beings, including Westerners, who can assume a respectful relationship with nature, since we are part of the wisdom of Mother Nature and the universal power; just as the native Amazonian peoples do. For this reason, the signs engraved on the copper are stylizations of Amazonian semiotics.
The various Amazonian nationalities live harmoniously with nature, however, the environment in which they live is disappearing due to the consequences of the industries: oil, logging, mining and, today, the meat industry. Therefore, it is essential to preserve the semiology of the native peoples who inhabit it to protect their ancient identity, as well as to protect the Amazon rainforest itself, this unique ecosystem in the world, which is home to millions of endemic plant and animal species. , declared a world biosphere reserve.
Paper is an essential element in society; Huge areas of native forests are permanently deforested to plant eucalyptus (the third largest monoculture on the planet) to make industrial paper. Abaca planting and extraction is much more sustainable. For this reason I produce handmade paper from abaca, this palm tree – Musa Textilis – rich in cellulose, restores soils that have been destroyed by monocultures.
Handmade paper is a symbol of Eastern culture since it was invented in China, engraved copper is a symbol of Western society due to the industrial revolution and signs are a symbol of the cultures of South and Central America due to their semiotics, creating in the work syncretism between these cultures and societies, which are not only mutually compatible and inclusive, but also synergistic; with the aim of contributing to shared humanity.
